Iran's Mousavi hints at new opposition rally
November 4th is an official holiday to mark the Iranian seizure of our embassy in 1979. It is usually a day taken off to hold marches to denounce the United States and Israel.
The opposition is calling (for weeks now, and it's not "hints") for mass demonstrations on this day as well to protest the Thugocracy in control of Iran. The Mullahs and Ahmadinejad have been warning them not to do it.
Of course, our administration is COMPLETELY invested its future by recognizing the current regime as legitimate and giving ZERO support to the opposition.
Once again, Obama and his cronies find more in common with thug government than with true democracies and honest movements for freedom.

The Sad State of our Local Online Paper In NW Florida
Quote
The NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released today ought to concern Northwest Florida Republicans, and give them cause to hope that the party can find firmer direction between now and November 2010's mid-term elections.
Among other things, the poll found:
-- Democratic President Barack Obama's approval rating remains at 51 percent. Asked how they felt about Obama, 56 percent said they feel "very" or "somewhat" positive about him.
-- All told, 42 percent of respondents said they felt very or somewhat positive about
Democrats in general.
-- In contrast, 25 percent said they feel very or some positive about Republicans. That's even lower than Nancy Pelosi, who scored 26 percent on the same question!
-- Asked who they want to control Congress, 46 percent said Democrats, while 38 percent said Republicans. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.
I happen to like the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll because it's co-sponsored by a traditionally liberal news organization and a traditionally conservative news organization. And that's why it's results ought to be a cause for concern for
Republicans.
My view: Republicans need to quit being the party of shrillness. They need to quit being the party of shouters. They need to quit hoping that Obama will misstep enough to lose Congress. Instead, the Republicans need to distinguish themselves again as the party for individual rights and freedoms, and the party of limited government. Above all, they need to quit scaring many Americans who view them as the party that isn't inclusive, and that increasingly views the world as "US vs. the liberals." That will not get the Republicans the votes they need. They need to persuade independents, not frighten them away.

Here is My response:
Mr. Rice:
I suspect that one poll doth not make a trend. As seen in Races for Governor in Virginia and New Jersey ( A traditional Democratic Stronghold) the Republicans are showing very strong signs of life. Which is more than I can say your performance as "Director of Content for Florida Freedom Newspapers" which appears to be extremely sloppy, indeed negligent.
Below is a link to download a screenshot of your "Election News" section of your online paper taken at 28 October 2009 at 08:15 PM. For those of you who read this before Mr. Rice gets his act in gear and changes it, you need merely follow the Local pull-down menu and click "Election News". Here is a Link to the Active Site:
http://www.nwfdailynews.com/sections/election-news/
And here is a Link to download as to how it looked on 28 October 2009 at 08:15 PM, just in case you, fellow blog followers, read this post after Mr. Rice does and he has scrambled to change it to avoid further humiliation.
http://www.box.net/shared/inukfx8h4f
It is painfully obvious that Mr. Rice has failed to do his job as "Director of Content for Florida Freedom Newspapers" because the Election News Site has not been Updated since at least 20 January 2009. Now You can go to the Palm Beach Post Online (http://www.postonpolitics.com/) or the St. Petersburg Times Politics site (http://blogs.tampabay.com/buzz/) for some actual, up to the minute news on Local, State, and National Politics but it seems that such an effort on behalf of our Own NW Florida Daily News by the "Director of Content for Florida Freedom Newspapers" is quite beyond his meager capabilities.
I have a question? Are your advertisers on this "Election" site satisfied with their product placement or are you even getting paid to have them on that page (in other words, you haven't bothered to take them down)? In the REAL WORLD Mr. Rice, you would be fired for such incompetence...But you don't really live in the real world do you? You live in the world where on occasion you crib a story from another MSM outlet and make snarky references which show you to be just another shallow liberal without any real depth of intelligence (or due diligence)
Attention to detail, Mr. Rice, is a trait expected of a real newspaperman. By the way, I'm sending this to both the St. Petersburg Times and Palm Beach Post Websites, just in case there is some young "Jimmy Olsen" out there and sees an opportunity to advance himself in the Journalism World by replacing you as "Director of Content for Florida Freedom Newspapers".
Your section, "Mugshots", however is outstanding and is probably your biggest draw!

John Ford and the Battle of Midway
God bless our troops in harms way in the Global War on Terror
How Newt Gingrich Ruined My Sunday "Hour of Zen"
It was Sunday, high noon on the Florida Panhandle. I had just dropped my son off at a his friends house so they could work on their joint science project. I was in my "Man Cave". I had donned my exercise gear, wrapped my right knee, had a towel, tuned the TV to watch "The Game", Vikings vs. Steelers; Favre vs. Roethlisberger. Volume turned waaaay up because so I could hear over my Rowing Machine. This is my hour, made sacred to me cause it's Pro Football season. I was assured of one hour just to enjoy the game while at the same time lose myself in the rowing my daily 10000 meters. Then the wife comes down and says I got a phone call... No biggie.. probably one of my guys telling they will be late for work Monday.... It wasn't.
I said hello and some lady told me she was calling from "American Solutions" and would I listen to a recorded message from Newt Gingrich and then answer one question after the message. Being the good republican, I said sure (kickoff was a few minutes off) and Newt's message began. It was a stock campaign speech, time to recapture our future, Obama is leading us to socialism, etc and then he invoked the Ronald Reagan's name to support his cause. This caused me some unease, and as to why you will soon read.
The Recording ended and a different woman came on and said did I listen to the recording (d'oh, lady, I'm still on the line) I said sure and she then asked the question: "Did I agree with Speaker Gingrich that we needed to fight Obama's Agenda?"
Ok, they said answer one question and this was it. I said "Of Course". Then came what I was expecting, the old request for money. I waited and it came, would I be willing to donate $250 for an autographed copy Of Newt's latest book. Not $25, Not $50, not even $100. Nope, the lady had the brass balls to ask me for TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS.
I am not a poor man, nor am I a rich man. I'm your average college educated guy, medically retired from the Navy due to ticker problems, making his way in the IT world as a contractor. If I didn't have a family provide for, I would be content to work in a bookstore and live a monk-like existence with my only concession to luxury would be insistence on having an HDTV for Sports, Fox News and the Discovery Channel and a Computer with an Internet connection. Oh, yeah.. and the Rowing machine. I make a decent living, but I know the value of a buck and I pay my bills and I've got 9 more years till my mortgage is paid, my couture is by Sam's Club and I drive a 12 year old Ford Ranger. (My wife keeps telling me to treat myself to a new car, we can afford it, but I'm Stubborn and would rather save the money...So I guess you could call me a tightwad.)
So I sorta gagged on the $250 smackers request and then I got pissed. I told this lady (in no uncertain terms) that I would only support Newt Gingrich when he withdrew his support for Dede Scozzafava and endorsed Doug Hoffman in the NY-23rd District race. Period.
Well, I got to give the lady on the other line credit, she gamely tried to explain why it was important to do something, but I interrupted her, not having any of it. I told her that the old compromising GOP that blew its chance in between 1994 and 2006, that became part of the problem and not the solution, were things of the past as far as I was concerned and that's why I'm supporting Rubio over Crist and Hoffman over Scozzafava. Then I told her that if Reagan were alive, he would have been first to support Hoffman over Scozzafava, etc.. I was on fire! By now, to most normal people, it would be apparent I wasn't giving Newt's Organization crap, plus the game had started and I knew my hour of Zen had been ruined by this phone call. But the Lady kept trying to get me to give money. So I brought out the big gun.
I said that there was no way I giving money to a man who was banging his secretary behind his wife's back, while they were impeaching President Clinton for porking Monica Lewinski and lying about it. (Technically, Clinton never "Porked" Lewinski, but I digress). I admit, It was the ultimate cheap shot, especially considering I was a Westpac Sailor in my day and really don't give a damn to what adults do behind closed doors and am a libertarian in the Cheney mold on such issues. But it shut her up and we both hanged up on each other (I think she beat me to the punch... damn it)
So I got on my Rowing machine, started rowing and tried to concentrate on the game, but then I remembered the Commercial with Newt and Pelosi about Agreeing on the Climate Change Scam, and I started rowing harder, and then I remembered Newt with Al Sharpton, and I started rowing harder and then the whole choosing to support Dede Scozzafava over Doug Hoffman and (TIME OUT ON BLOGGIN ..PITTSBURGH RETURNED A VIKINGS FUMBLE FOR A TOUCHDOWN!)
Oh, Where was I ..Oh yes, well I finished my Rowing, Looked up the YouTube clips of Newt with Nancy, Al and defending Dede Scozzafava. Then I began to write this rant to cleanse my soul. (TIME OUT: VIKINGS RUN A KICKOFF FOR A TOUCHDOWN)
To all my fellow Republicans. We cannot win if we do not stand for the basic principles Reagan espoused. Limited government, Strong Defense, Individual Freedom. The only way to reduce the federal government is to limit the taxes it collects and to prioritize the spending of the taxes to effectively strengthen our country and its defenses. Newt, Dole, Bush had their chance and they blew it. Bush had a war on his hands, and while he eventually got it right in Iraq (or as right as we can..It's up to the Iraqis now) he wasn't as successful in Afghanistan. And Bush must share the blame waste of taxpayer treasure called TARP. But despite Bush's failures, his financial sins pales to the orgy of spending we have seen these last ten months. And a Republican party endorsing a candidate that would rubber stamp such spending is capitulation to the Democrats. I can no more endorse Dede Scozzafava as I could endorse Olympia Snowe or Arlen Specter. Such Republicans and former Republicans give the Democrats the fig leaf of Bipartisanship they so desperately crave. (STEELERS INTERCEPT FARVE...RUN FOR TD!! 1 MINUTE LEFT IN GAME--STEELERS WIN!)
To our Republican Leaders in Congress, the RNC, RNCC, NRSC... You lose your base when you abandon your base. You could have supported Toomey over Specter. You didn't. You can still support Hoffman over Scozzafava.
And Newt, quit making commercials and appearances in support of Democratic agendas. And stick to writing History books. Your day is over as far as the future of the Republican Party..we don't need you anymore. Feel free to play elder statesman...but that is about it as far as I'm concerned. If you need more convincing about Newt..I present the three You tube video's below.
Newt and Nancy endorsing the Climate Change Scam:
Here is Newt and the Reverand Al:
Here Is Newt trying to explain why he is endorsing Scozzafava over Hoffman. Just like when the NRSC supported Specter over Toomey:

Bailout BS: TARP was a Scam and Obama Voted for it
Republicans, Bush and Obama both have to answer for this. But more Republicans than Democrats voted against it.
We need to clean house and have the Big Financials and Banks answer for their greed. Mark it down...the current path of spending without thinking cannot continue.
It didn't work in the thirties and it won't work now.
Obama Calls on Banks to Lend More to Small Businesses
Here's a link to what the Inspector of the TARP funds is saying. It ain't pretty.
All the bad debt has got to be flushed from the system in order for the sound banks to start lending again (and the bad banks go under and cease to exist). Bush and Obama are both to blame for putting off this needed day of reckoning to occur. Each day we postpone it, the worse it will be when it happens. The problem is that we are now broke due to the Democrats orgy of spending and interest rates have nowhere to go but up. We are out of ammo to fight this
BOTTOM LINE: There is NO PAINLESS SOLUTION, NO SPENDING OUR WAY OUT OF THIS. Tough times are ahead and we need to take our medicine and move on.
Want a solution/Explanation: Here is PowerPoint presentation I posted a while back.
Here is the same PowerPoint presentation in 97-2003 format.
Solar Power Plant In Florida == 50 grand a Home
150 Million Dollars, it powers only 3000 homes and it "created" only 400 Jobs. Do the math. 50 grand a home. All in the name of an Ecological theory that is looking more and more like crank/junk science (Temperatures have dropped now for eleven years in a row).
We are going broke and we are wasting money on this. Their is no way solar power can meet the electrical needs of a modern, 1st tier industrial state. No possible way.
We should be concentrating on Nuclear Power and our own hydrocarbon technology and resources to get us off foreign oil in the shortest time possible. That will keep trillions of dollars from being sent overseas and make real jobs for real Americans.
However, we have a Congress and a President who think this is not possible and will not accept Nuclear power because the lefty loons in their Party won't allow it.
2010 folks, 2010. We have got to win in 2010.

Folks: Lots of Banks are Knee-Deep in bad Debt and are covering it up with your Tax Money
Commercial Loans are frozen. Banks are letting carrying bad debt and not foreclosing on defaulting home loans because they can't absorb the loss...Banks are lying to the government and the people on what their true net worth is.
Does anyone think that this multi-trillion dollar orgy of government spending and massive debt good for our country? Sooner, rather than later the other shoe is going to drop.
Be prepared for a long period of Stagflation and higher taxes. And get used to 10% and higher unemployment.

Folks: This Is Why I support Marco Rubio
2) Crist WHOLEHEARTEDLY embraced the Obama Economic Plan, which has done NOTHING to improve Florida. I challenge the Governor to come out and Publically address how the Porkulus bill has helped Florida. Here's a tip.... HE CAN'T!!
3) He seems to have spent more time campaigning for cash and runing for Senate than he has addressing Florida's Problems. Name one innovative, truly game changing thing he has done for the State... name one and back it up with facts (and please, don't bring up that hapless "Healthcare" reform that he enacted...it is a total failure.
4) Crist wants to be Senator so he can be called Senator...Rubio wants to be Senator so he can make a difference.
5) Florida doesn't need another RINO...Look how well Mel Martinez worked out.
In Summary, support a Real Republican...Marco Rubio....

Definition Of Insanity: Doing the Same Thing Over and Over Again and Expecting a Different Result
People, didn't this get us in the jam we are in now? And with the Commercial Real Estate tsunami poised to engulf the economic landscape, this is like hoping for more rain during a flood.
When will Congress get to investigate why this is still being allowed?
I guess as long as the Democrats keep changing the Locks on the Doors, they will continue to get away with it.
2010 folks, 2010. Now More than ever we need to throw the Democrat bums out.

More Stimulus in the Works???!!!!!
Folks, this is insane. WE ARE BROKE.
1) We are about to get hit with a commercial Real Estate Mortgage crisis that may dwarf the Home Mortgage disaster we are in. (Commercial Loans are FROZEN right now because the banks KNOW they are underwater and can't afford the loans)
2) Christmas Shopping is poised to be the worst in decades (That's when the chickens are going to come home to roost)-- Standby for more retail stores chapter 11's in January.
3) This stock market bounce is fuelled by borrowed money supplied by the taxpayer being declared as "profits" for the big Wall Street firms. It is also a bounce that has occurred too fast and will pop after the Xmas season numbers come in.
4) Even the liberal media is finally getting the message that the deficit under Obama is unsustainable and spells economic suicide.
5) The dollar is sinking like a rock and sooner or later the Fed will have to raise interest rates.
And the Democrats have realized the trillion dollar Porkulus was a complete failure and that come 2010 they face disaster if the economy and unemployment are still tanking, so they have a typical knee jerk reaction and are looking to spend more money.
Fellow Conservatives and Republicans: We Must Fight THIS! It is time for the Democrats to pay the piper and any Republican who supported Porkulus and even thinks of supporting another "Stimulus package" should have his "Republican" card revoked.
Folks, don't wait till it's too late... start writing/emailing and calling your congressman and Senator's now.

Taliban's Afghan allies tell Barack Obama: 'Cut us a deal and we'll ditch al-Qaeda'
If Obama goes this route, all he will have done is set up a hostile regime next to Pakistan that will give safe haven for Pakistani Islamic extremists a logistics base and safe haven to operate out of.
Yes, Bush must take some of the blame for this, but it's happening on Obama's watch. To accept the Taliban to keep their word is height of naivety. Since when has any extremist, Muslim fundamentalist ever kept its word?
Too allow the Taliban a free hand in Afghanistan is to give al-Qaeda a safe haven and dramatically increase the chances that hardcore Muslim extremists get control in nuclear armed Pakistan.

Time to call Senator Nelson if this is true...
However, I've also heard that Republicans can gum up the works by insisting strict protocol and no more "by Unanimous Consent" readings of bills.
Anyway, time to call Bill Nelson and let him know the good people of Florida WILL NOT be amused if he supports this in anyway. And call Allen Boyd while you are at it.
If the Democrats do pull this off, remember, we (Republicans) then have the green light to pull the same stunt and reverse it when we are back in the majority. The filibuster will be dead.

DANGER: Idiots and their Insidious Influence on Individuals
Here is the good professor's piece of tripe. Read it and ask yourself...is this a piece of work by a serious man? The answer is no.
First, the Nobel Peace Prize is decided by 5 left wing white socialists (Even by French standards) who have no concept of what it is like in the real world. That's it. Five People. Here is the make up of the current committee:
1) Thorbjørn Jagland
2) Sissel Rønbeck
3) Kaci Kullmann Five
4) Inger-Marie Ytterhorn
5) Ågot Valle
I don't see one guy named Smith or Lebowski....
It was people like these who gave Yasser Arafat the Peace Prize. Never mind that the man in both his personal and public life was a MONSTER. (I am a retired Intel officer...I know of what I speak)
It's people like these that who gave Jimmy Carter the Peace prize; A man who never met a third world dictator he didn't like, almost single-handily ruined our nation and against whom a case can arguably be made that he is Anti-Semitic
And our good professor, instead of seeing what a total farce this Prize has become, blithely states that Obama so richly deserves the Peace Prize because it:
"comes much earlier in his tenure and can serve a very different function, offering a compass to guide him as he makes critical decisions about national security in the weeks ahead."That's it! A Moral Compass for Obama, set by five privileged Norwegians! Man, I am sure glad these people are here to guide Obama with regards to matters of life and death for our troops! See how well it worked for Arafat.
Oh, yeah and I'd be remiss to note that they also gave it to Al Gore, whose Global Warming hysteria (and the fortune he has made off of hyping it) is now even being questioned by members of the left wing media, as it becomes painfully apparent that all of the predictions made by the enviro-wackos are not being supported by the FACTS. (The earth has been cooling for ELEVEN YEARS now folks...that is scientific fact.)
But our good Professor Zelizer, just like the majority of our academic elites, is oblivious or sympathetic to the inherent Anti-Americanism of Europe's Left. These Europeans are the same people who preached detente with a corrupt Soviet Empire, have always resented America's status as the premier power and guardian of Western Civilization post WWII, and are currently too afraid to stand-up to the radical Islamic minorities growing up in their own country.
With the exception of Britain, these people gave up on defending their ideals and country in the 1930's when they refused to see the danger Hitler was to world peace. They stood idly by and had their asses kicked. (And guess who bailed them out).
And sadly, most of our professors in history and politics agree with this sanctimonious, prissy lot and expect our children to regurgitate and spew forth this nonsense in order to get an "A". It isn't our medical system that needs reform, it's our education system. The first step is to get rid of academic tenure. I can get fired from my job, so why can't they?
I know that when the good Professor and others like him read stuff written by the likes of me (a member of the "Petite Bourgeoisie"), they sigh, roll their eyes and sarcastically shake their heads at what nonsense they have to put up with, but, unless something is done REAL fast to turn this country around, we are going to have to start making hard decisions on how we cut back on the cost of a college education.
My first recommendation is they cut out all Political Science Classes and fire all those professors. Also, fire all the history professors as well and replace them by handing out textbooks (chosen by retired U.S. Marine Generals) to students, tell them to read and study it for the next quarter/semester and tell them that there will be a multiple choice final exam that can be graded by a computer. If it's good enough for the SAT, it's good enough to see how well you studied history.

Oh Dear, Doubts about Global Warming...Even the BBC is Beginning to Cover their 6 O'clock's
Obama and the Nobel
But enough of this nonsense on whether he deserved it or not... What should concern us is what impact this award will have on Obama's decision to address the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan.
With a troop request over 40-60 thousand troops coming soon to his table, and such military geniuses like Joe Biden saying we can win via remote control vice troops on the ground, President Obama has a very personal decision to make as to how to win this war. And win this war he must. If he loses this war or is losing this war by 2012, he will face political oblivion. He is on record as saying this war is the fight we must win. He hammered this meme over and over in the 2008 election. He is morally obligated to win in Afghanistan. A few white guys in Norway should not deter his efforts.
There have been rumblings of defining victory by letting the Taliban exist in Afghanistan and only insist it not be a safe haven for Al-Qaeda. This is absurd as it is dangerous. To condone the right of the Taliban to have the right to hold sway over the people of Afghanistan is grant formal recognition to one of the most evil ideologies ever to walk the planet. And to think that the Taliban, if granted immunity, would not allow Al-Qaeda to exist in their midst is a pipe dream.
No, Mr. Obama's disingenuous 2008 campaign rhetoric has hamstrung him. If he is to have any political future with the American People, he must be willing to show up in Oslo in December to accept his coveted "Peace Prize" in the middle of a massive ramping up of the war in Afghanistan. He must be willing to look at the pompous audience in Oslo and tell them that sometimes that in order to achieve Peace, appeasement is not the answer to dark evil, but hard, unrelenting War until a land is safe from brutal inhumane bastards is.
Finally, Our troops and innocent people will be harmed and killed during this effort. This is an unavoidable fact of war. Washington, Lincoln, FDR, Truman and both Bushes were willing to accept this burden and carry on.
Will Obama have this inner strength? History will be the judge.

Blog War ends (part deux)
Mr. White aka bloggybayou,
In the case of certain commenters, we wouldn't let them be citizen bloggers for free; rather, they would have to pay us!
And of course, as always we reserve the right to remove certain commenters from our site altogether if they post factually inaccurate information about private businesses or individuals.
Do you resemble that remark?
Thanks,

And I responded to his somewhat veiled threat(?):

More Blogging with the NW Florida Daily News
Mr. White,
Again, please get your facts straight. Conjecture is not your strength.
Indeed, Freedom -- a company that encompasses 30 daily newspapers, more than 50 weeklies, and several television stations, is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy. As we have reported ourselves, the company's situation is a result of a large debt load Freedom took on several years ago when several family members divested themselves from the company. The current recession, and changes in the newspaper industry, have made it difficult for Freedom to meet its debt obligations, and that is why the company, in cooperation with its lenders, has filed chapter 11.
But the Daily News remains very profitable. In fact, our audience -- print and online combined -- has never been bigger. I am proud to say that we are the dominant source for news in Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Walton counties. Nwfdailynews.com generates more than 5 million page views a month! Just think: You are one of about 300,000 unique visitors to our Web site in October. Isn't that great?! Aren't you proud to be a part of all that?!
Certainly the newspaper has been impacted by the worst recession in 40 years -- as has virtually every business in Northwest Florida. The Daily News is impacted precisely because other businesses have been impacted. Every business -- including the Daily News -- is looking forward to the end of the recession.
Meanwhile, though, the Daily News will continue to aggressively cover the news, which means we'll continue to attract hundreds of thousands of readers online and in print. Again, isn't that great?!
Of course we'll continue to draw factually inaccurate or pithy criticisms from some members of our audience. But that is a small price to pay for the privilege of serving so many other readers.
Thanks again for your application to become a featured "citizen blogger." Please continue to work on getting your facts right. It would make your self-described brutal honesty so much more effective.
Pat Rice
My Response:
http://investing.businessweek.com/research/stocks/private/snapshot.asp?privcapId=4438024
According to the above "Business Week" article, it specifically states that FLORIDA FREEDOM NEWSPAPERS, INC filed for bankruptcy. While it is in conjunction with main holding company, the fact is that you, as a subsidiary, are bankrupt and therefore not profitable. That is a fact, not conjecture.
And since you are directly responsible for "Regional Content" of FLORIDA FREEDOM NEWSPAPERS, INC, I guess you bear a lion's share for the fact that your company is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy and having to ask people to work for nothing. Is the situation in your company going to be one of those where the upper management saves their jobs while the little guys in the organization take the hit? (like moving much of the organization to Panama City from Fort Walton Beach?) Is this why the content and size of the paper has gotten noticeably less and less?
Let's face it. The mere fact that you are asking people to work for free is indicative of the current financial situation you are in. No amount of claims of readership ( you got a captive/monopoly audience here - You have no real competition in this general area and you are still having to cut to cut corners and content.) can change the fact that you are on record asking people to work for you for free in an attempt to increase your profits. Otherwise, advertise the jobs and pay the people a salary to blog if you are so profitable. Put up or shut up!
That's part of the problem in corporate America. Upper Management gets to keep their job after the bailout or bankruptcy while the worker bees get cut or pay reduced. In Japan, when a company goes belly up, their upper management apologizes for a job poorly done and resigns. Not a bad custom.
Thanks for enlightening me on the your corporate structure. I am more than willing to concede you are making a profit if you are willing to open up your company's books and let me and some of my accounting friends examine them to determine if you are really profitable. Otherwise, FLORIDA FREEDOM NEWSPAPERS, INC filing for bankruptcy, the decreasing of size and content in your paper and your request that someone work for you for free and under your rules and regulations all point to the fact that your paper is, just like many of the papers around this country, in a slow death spiral. All external indicators point to a paper and a organization in serious financial trouble.

Mr. Rice responds to my response
Quote:
Mr. White,
Again, to correct an error in your comment, I wasn't demoted.
My move in to the regional "director of content" role for Florida Freedom newspapers was, in fact, a promotion that carries with it additional responsibilities for all 10 newspapers our company owns in Northwest Florida.
Also, as I mentioned earlier, I will definitely have someone check to make sure I have the proper title in all cases on nwfdailynews.com. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
And, as I stated earlier, a number of talented people besides you have already applied for the opportunity to be a featured "citizen blogger" with the Daily News. As you know, many of your fellow commenters online are very witty and informed citizens. I will keep you and other readers informed as we progress through this application process.
Finally, I don't doubt that you have been fired at some point during your life. Clearly, it did build character!
Thanks,
Pat Rice

My response:
Mr. Rice:
It was a lay off, but it felt like being fired and you are right, it did build character! It also got me a job where I am now making much more money than where I was at.
What you have failed to grasp from my earlier comments is that you have failed to really confront the issue of why your paper is essentially "dying on the vine". Content is king and your recent shift of your editorial ideology from a liberal one to one more libertarian in desperate hope of regaining subscribers you drove away is apparently a dismal failure. The AP and Reuters wire reports are available in real time on the Internet, so you guys, when you print their articles for the paper, you are really publishing "Yesterday's News". Your online content is critical towards your future success and you haven't even bothered to put a proper Bio up that has been out of date for 10 months.
I think a good strong press is essential to maintaining our freedom. They are the watchdogs of the public's interest. And unless it is NPR, it needs to make a profit.
Unfortunately for you, paper newspapers are just too slow to when it comes to reporting the news. With the Internet and 24 hours news channels and TV Local News...your failure and bankruptcy may be because you are increasingly irrelevant.
So, let's review the situation: Your Company, for which you are responsible for Content, is bankrupt; You are reduced to asking people to blog for free in order to increase your online hit count; Your online Bio is 10 months out of date and that tells me you were doing a sloppy job as "Director of Content".
I suggest you are make an effort to increase your relevancy by reassigning your assets to national and international news analysis vice cribbing Reuters and the AP. You have a lot of retired experts in multitude of fields who reside in the area. Pay them a few bucks to write an article on the area of their expertise. I bet they would jump at the chance. I also suggest more in-depth reporting on local issues and leave your liberal or libertarian beliefs at the door. Go "Joe Friday" in reporting the local situation. You would be surprised how cold hard facts impress and move people to take action.
And, while it may dismay some, hit the local crime beat HARD. People dig Crime and it sells papers. It is the one area that you have the edge. You have got to make a profit to survive and believe it or not, I and others who really think your paper has devolved into a ghost of its former self, want you to survive. If you have to resort to a little "lurid tabloid" crime reporting to pay the bills, do it! The NY Post makes money. The NY Times does not.
The old saying never get into a argument with people who buy ink by the barrel is no longer applicable. The new saying should be, never get into an argument with people who can ban you from their site (not that you would do that to me...)
My late Mother once told me: "Royce, you're problem is that you are too brutally honest and you piss people off ". I plead guilty.
Believe it it or not, this is constructive criticism.

Obama misses his chance on Iran
Mr Ledeen is follows Iran closely and feels that if the current "Green" movement could replace the current regime, that it would mean Iran would give up the bomb. I hope he is right. I think he is wrong. However, he is spot on about Obama being unable to think outside the box. I also think Bush failed in that department also.
While I freely acknowledge the fact Mr. Ledeen is more an expert than I am with regards to Iran, I feel more than just words are needed to help the “Green Revolution”. Unfortunately our President (and Foggy Bottom) have missed out on a real opportunity to make a difference. And, even though I am a card carrying Republican, I feel Bush also failed to take advantage of the burgeoning unrest in Iran.
I still maintain that the current regime can weather out the storm of unrest, especially since they have allies in Russia and China who are vested in the “status quo” and are both willing to provide economic and technical help (I read somewhere that Iran, with Chinese assistance, has dramatically increased its ability to refine gasoline.. Mr. Ledeen, correct me if I am wrong) .
Don’t expect President Obama to do more than talk and don’t expect any meaningful sanctions from the international community. China is the real key and China WILL NOT support any UN Sanctions. They see the current regime as a useful tool that acts as a pain and distraction to the U.S. Make no mistake, the Chinese will play hardball and support the current regime as long as possible. It is in their interests.
As for the Bomb, even if the “Greens” take over, the sheer weight of the effort Iran has put into making a bomb will give it a life of its own. There are too many vested interests for it to grind to a halt. Iran sees the chance to regain the luster of ancient Persia and once more “assume” its rightful role as one of the world’s first tier powers. No Nukes, No Luster. Just ask China, India, Pakistan, and even France, who, without Nukes and its UN Veto power, would just be a big version of Lichtenstein.
When Soviet Union collapsed, we all thought that the Cold war and bad times were behind us. All that happened is that we turned a Communist Totalitarian State into a Capitalist Totalitarian State.
Even if the “Greens” topple the current regime, don’t expect a happy ending to this. Iran is determined to get the Bomb and they will, regardless of who is nominally in charge.
My two cents.
Mr. Rice Responds to My Application to Blog for the NW Florida Daily News
Thanks for your response to my column.
It would be premature at this point to accept your offer to be a featured citizen blogger on nwfdailynews.com. We plan to select a maximum of 2 bloggers to start, and several people have already replied, and I suspect a number more will reply before the weekend's finished. So it will take some time to make the selection.
Meanwhile, allow me to correct your view on a couple things.
First, I am the director of content for Florida Freedom Newspapers.
I was the editor of the Northwest Florida Daily News until last December, when I took my new title. You are in error in thinking I was "reassigned" to somehow get me out of the way at the Daily News. In fact, the editors of Freedom's two dailies and eight weeklies all report to me, as do their news staffs. Colin Lipnicky, who was my managing editor, is now editor of the Daily News, and he's doing a fine job. If there is a place on the Daily News Web site that still lists me as editor, I will see that it is corrected. However, I can assure you that if an error exists on the site regarding my title, it is not due to a breach of journalistic ethics, as you suggest.
Also, you are incorrect in asserting that the Daily News, or Freedom, have been "bought out." You are correct that our company is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy; a mutually agreed upon path between our owners and their lenders.
And, while you may not think it's important to be accurate with your facts, I DO think it's important to be accurate, whether in print or online.
Even opinions writers and bloggers ought to get their facts right. You are correct that there's a lot of inaccurate garbage online. But anyone who has the privilege of working as a citizen blogger on nwfdailynews.com will need to get their facts right. After receiving you email, I have to question whether you are able to do that.
Finally, our goal is to find a couple citizen bloggers who are responsible enough to blog on nwfdailynews.com with little or no guidance. As I stated in my column, I am looking for a diversity of blogging opinion. Our interest is not in censoring any opinions. On the other hand, if you can't accept the notion that you would be subject to the same professional guidance as others who give opinions on nwfdailynews.com, then you are probably not the citizen blogger we're looking for. To be frank, we're looking for a citizen blogger who can attract an audience; I'm not sure you qualify.
Have a nice day, and thanks again for your interest.
Pat Rice
My response:
Here is a link to the SiteCapture that has you listed as Editor, incorrectly, since December 2008.
If you are a man of your Word... Fix it NOW. And say I was Right. If memory serves me, Editor outranks "Regional Director of Content". You Were Demoted. No harm in that, but be honest. Hell, I've been layed off/fired. It builds character!
One of the beauties of blogging is your ability to correct errors quickly. If your newspaper wasn't bought out recently, I will take your word as a man of honor and admit that I was wrong and I formally apologize. But as far as your profile on the site stating you have been the Editor since 2004, while it has been almost 10 months since you were "reassigned", then your sloppiness in correcting this may indicate you need to show more attention to detail. Will you admit to that?
Your company and paper are bankrupt. Your circulation and readership, as well as the amount of content in your Deadwood paper is getting smaller. Your national and international news is routinely crap regurgitated from Reuters and the AP, and you do not check their facts or their bias. That is just plain laziness for I know for a fact, that wire services routinely slant, misquote and misrepresent facts. (I was a professional Intel officer in my previous life and have seen many examples where the AP/Reuters/CNN routinely misreported on events happening on the ground, like in Bosnia)
If you are going to crib off the wire services, please fact check them. Reuters especially, for they are openly Anti-Semitic with regards to their Middle East reporting.
A vibrant press is an essential part of our freedom. By all accounts, your company is failing to meet the needs of the people it serves. Just like the NY Times, LA Times and the Washington Post.
Question my veracity all you want, but unlike most of the people who "comment" anonymously on your blog site, I openly put my name and reputation out their on my Blog for all to see.
I have a day job, and I blog/write for the sheer thrill of it. I offer it free and allow anyone to comment on my site.
As far as putting out the call for a citizen blogger to work at no cost for your publication, you essentially are begging for people to work for free in order for your company survive so you, personally, can still have a paycheck. I've got no problem with that, and I assure you that what I would write would far outstrip anything your local columnists can put out. So before you reject me, read my blog and feel free to slam me or admire me. Rest assured, I can take it.
If you are looking for someone to sing "kumbaya", I ain't your guy. Guess what: someone like me may generate interest.
I look forward to a mutually productive, if adversarial relationship no matter what.
Cheers

An Open Blog Post to the Northwest Florida Daily News
Mr. Rice:UPDATE: Here is what I added to the Email I wrote to him concerning his request for a sample paragraph on healthcare:
I already blog and do it for free/on my own Dime. Also, I have my real name on the Blog. Nom de Plum's are OK, as long as you have the guts to identify yourself on your Blog.
Mr. Rice: Why should a Blogger subject himself to editing and interference when one can do it on their own for free? And please, don't speak to me of maintaining Journalistic ethics... There are none in the MSM as far as I can see.
For Example: Your Online Bio states this:
quote:
Pat Rice has been editor of the Northwest Florida Daily News since 2004. His column also appears in the newspaper's opinion pages every Sunday.

While in the deadwood issue of the paper, you are described as "Regional Director of Content" Which is it Mr. Rice? Let's face it, When the paper got bought out, you got, how can I put this gently..."reassigned". Either way come clean on it on the website. If you are "Regional Director Of Content" on the website, say so. Or if you are only Editor of the "Online, Free Website of Northwest Florida Daily News that no longer is printed in Fort Walton Beach and has moved most of it assets to Panama City while the Parent company is in Chapter 11 Bankruptcy", then say so.
I'll make you an offer. I'll submit Blog posts for your paper that will also appear on my Blog. You can make grammatical and spelling changes as you see fit, but the free speech expressions and editorial intent remain undisturbed and essentially unedited. If I write something you employers deem unworthy or too dangerous (i.e., Liable or flat out lies), just put an online Blurb saying you won't print what I wrote but it can be found on http://www.bloggybayou.com/. Rest assured it will be posted along with a blast at your paper for have the lack of insight and guts to publish. Punditry is merely opinion. That's all I do.
OK Daily News, I made you an offer. Your move. It's not like I'll get paid or gonna cost you money....
Cheers,

Above is what I posted on your site as comments. I have a Site from which you can judge a body of work, not some flippant subject picked out and ask potential employees to write on like trained Monkeys or a seventh grade essay trial.
If you want to know how I feel about public option healthcare, here are two links. already written:http://www.bloggybayou.com/2009/05/on-national-healthcare-personal-story.html

Why did I slam you on your Bio… you said you have to have thick skin to write… Well, do ya? I've been chewed out by masters for the Art…. Surface Navy Style…You don't know what abuse is till you been at sea for 4 solid months and all tempers are frayed and at the breaking Point. Rest assured, I can take it and dish it out….
E. Royce White, Jr.
Update II: The reason I use the W.C. Fields picture, is that he is better looking than me and Cary Grant would be too much of a stretch. Anyway, it's the words, not the picture that count.

Obama appointee lauded NAMBLA figure?
There are two ways to look at this. If true, Obama has appointed a certifiable Monster to be the "Safe Schools Czar". If false, Kevin Jennings has a hell of a good lawsuit on his hands.
I've searched Whitehouse.gov and Mr. Gibbs, when confronted with the story of Mr. Jennings looking the other way when a 15 year old admitted he was in a relationship with a much older adult, didn't seem too upset.
I wonder if Mr. Jennings being an admirer of Harry Hay of the North American Association for Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA), which promotes the legalization of sexual abuse of young boys by older men will upset Mr. Gibbs if proven true?
Folks, It's time to call/email/fax your congressman and Senator on this one. I don't care if you are for Gay marriage or not, adults preying on minors is a monstrous crime whether it be same sex or heterosexual. If what this editorial says is true, Mr. Jennings needs to go, as well as the people who appointed him.
