David Frum at "FrumForum" Completely Misreads The Afghan Situation

Here is a link to his article on the CNN website that was also posted on his Web site.  This is the kind of stupid stuff that is written by East Coast elites who never served a day at a strict Summer camp, much less the military.

Here was my response I posted on his web site:

Mr. Frum:

This flies right in the face of the surge strategy employed by Bush in 2006-2008.  IN SPITE of a hostile press and a hostile opposition, he managed to to get the situation under control.  This also meant using ROEs much more liberal and dangerous to civilian populations than advocated by McChrystal.  The problem is that McChrystal should have stayed at the 3 star level and a more mature, politically savvy 4-star would have been better at making Obama relaxing the ROEs (which were way too restrictive).  McChrystal was Obama's man (he even let it be known he voted for the man..A big no-no in the military) and while he might have held Obama in contempt privately, he obviously lacked the political skills to influence and get Obama to tact to the right on the ROE issue.  Petraeus has had the rules relaxed even before he is confirmed.  

Also, McChrystal is Special Forces through and through... anybody with any military background will tell you there is no group in the military more arrogant,insular and dangerous than Special Forces (especially SEALs).  You put them in charge of regular troops at your peril...  They are a tool that needs to be controlled and precisely used by regular Line officers who get the big picture much better than Special Forces...
